{Freebie Fridays} Win an Ouchie Pouch from Snuggly Monkey

This giveaway is now closed.

Happy Freebie Friday! Woo! It has been such a busy week for me here, and it is going to be an even busier weekend, but I am happy to see Friday! Today we have an adorable Ouchie Pouch that Claudia {from Snuggly Monkey} will send to one lucky winner.

Lets learn a bit about Claudia first...

What made you want to become an artist?
I grew up as the black sheep in a very creative and artistic family :) My father is a painter, my brother a musician, my sister is a painter/crafter extraordinaire ... and so I've always had the desire to create but I felt like I lacked the talent and passion, until I found sewing and fabric. I absolutely love to sew and the creative process that comes along with creating something new.

What is your favorite item to create?
I think my favorite items to create are the fabric coil baskets. They are fun to make. I love how each one turns out a bit differently. But most of all, I love watching my daughters play with them for hours carrying their treasures in them all over the place and hearing from customers how much their children are enjoying their baskets.

What advice would you give to new artists on Etsy?
Be patient - it takes time and a lot of PR work to get yourself established on Etsy. I don't think I was prepared for that when I first got started here. I had my shop "open" for about 2.5 years before I actually got serious about it and started learning how to take better pictures, how to promote my shop, etc. I didn't realize how much of that "other stuff" is a part of success on Etsy. I thought that if I just had a good product and good customer service it would all just happen magically, but it didn't. I still think that it is SUPER important to have a good product and good customer service, but I now have a better understanding of how that is just one piece in the puzzle.

How do you promote your work?
This is something I am still very much learning how to do! Right now I am on Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest, and I use all 3 regularly to promote new listings, Treasury features, coupons/sales, etc. I maintain a blog, sporadically - on my to-do list to get better about that and use it as a better promotion tool. I participate in BNR (Buy-and-Replace) Treasuries here on Etsy. I curate Treasuries for Etsykids Team as well as just for fun. Participate in the HandmadeTop10 lists. Participate in FB Fan Contests and Blog giveaways.

I am still a pretty small shop, but if I ever find more time to devote to Snuggly Monkey and make this a bigger, more full time job, I would probably look into trying to get on Heartsy, possibly some FB ads, sponsoring my favorite Bloggers ... but I'm not ready for that kind of exposure :)

Do you have any websites connected to your shop?

Yes - perhaps too many!
Blog: http://www.snugglymonkey.com/
FB: www.facebook.com/SnugglyMonkey
Twitter: twitter.com/SnugglyMonkeyCo
Pinterest: pinterest.com/snugglymonkey/

What is the inspiration for your work?
My daughters. It is neat to see how my products & shop have changed over the years in accordance with how my girls have grown and the kinds of toys they like to play with :)

Do any of your items go toward a special cause?
I don't have specific items whose proceeds go to a special cause, but I do take part of my profits and donate to a variety of causes throughout the year. Most recently I've donated to the Red Cross Disaster Relief fund, Doctors without Borders and the Epilepsy Foundation.

Do you have a job outside of Etsy? How do you handle both?
Yes, I work (very) part-time with Early Head Start. I don't sleep very much and we don't have a TV in our house, so I pretty much spend every spare moment I have in the day either sewing or working on my shop on Etsy.

Where do you create?

My daughters and I share the playroom, which is very fitting since I would consider a "sewing studio" my personal playroom. I started out on just a little folding table in the corner, but my stuff takes up about 1/2 of the space now! My girls are good about sharing their space with me. I would share a picture but I don't want to admit to the world the disaster that we live in around here. I'll attach a photo of a portion of my fabric stash though :) You like my "fancy" fabric storage bins? I made them from some extra reusable grocery bags we had around - not exactly one of those gorgeous, meticulous, dream sewing studios I am always seeing on blogs and Pinterest!

What are your goals for your shop?
~ I would like to expand one day - offer more items and have more sales more regularly :)
~ I want Snuggly Monkey to remain true to my artistic vision. I think that sometimes I am tempted to make items not because I necessarily love to make them, but because I see that they sell well. I think that sometimes that is necessary because you need the financial rewards in order to be able to continue following your passion, but I don't want to JUST be making items like that. I want to continue making things just because I like doing it or want to whether or not it sells - it doesn't matter. I saw this great quote they other day that I think I am going to write above my workspace:
"I just want to make beautiful things even if nobody cares"

Is there anything else you would like to share with us?
Nope, just that I am grateful for this opportunity :) I think I've written you enough of a novel already (sorry about that!)

 Claudia is giving the winner their choice of her ready made Ouchie Pouches!
{this one is my fave}

Happy 2nd Birthday Bug!

Oh how time flies! It doesn't seem like two years ago, but Bug is 2 years old!

The second she woke up I sang "Happy Birthday" to her in every way I knew how {the traditional song, the "you say it's your birthday" song, and the song that Applebee's sings even got thrown in there too}

I can't wait to give her her birthday present when her daddy gets home and take her out to Friendly's for some special dinner and ice cream!

I love you Bug! I am so happy God gave you to me!
Happy 2nd birthday baby big girl!
PS - you'll always be my baby girl!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In honor of Bug's birthday, I am hosting a Birthday Bash Giveaway Album over on my Facebook page. It is now open to all my fans so come on over, "like" my page and start entering to win some amazing prizes!

{Toddler Tuesdays} Bubble Wrap Painting

Painting with a paintbrush all the time can get pretty boring. Especially for a toddler who loves to have new & different experiences. Change it up with some bubble wrap! Here is what you will need:

  •  bubble wrap
  • scissors
  • tape
  • toilet paper roll
Wrap up your toilet paper roll in bubble wrap. {I cut two long strips and wrapped it around each side.}

Make sure you cover the opening on one {or both} sides. This will make it easier to stamp it.
Dip in paint and stamp away!
You can also dip and roll {this was Bug's favorite way since it's the messiest!}
 And here is the final work of art:

Be sure to interact with your child during this project. It will help with early literacy! Talk about the colors they are using, the different ways to use the bubble wrap roll, or even talk about where you are going to hang it {or who you will give it to} when they are done.

Have fun!

{Mmm, Mmm, Mondays} with Kati from Around the Plate

Kati is sharing a recipe with us today that was specifically made for Bug based on her favorite foods! I was so excited to see what Kati whipped up and let me tell you, it is delish! I also knew she would send me a healthy recipe since she blogs about nutrition over at Around the Plate. Not only that, but she has expert guest posts, great recipes and she teaches you how you can be healthier.

Cina-nana Rolls

1 slice of cinnamon raisin bread

1 banana
1 tbsp sunflower seed butter
1 tbsp preserves
Cinnamon (optional)
Whipped cream (optional)

Directions:

1. Take your slice of cinnamon bread and remove the crust. Flatten with a rolling pin and then cut the bread length wise into 1 - 1 1/2 inch strips.
2. Spread the preserves on the bread and then the sunflower seed butter.
3. Slice the banana and place a few pieces on one end of the bread strips.
4. Roll up the bread strip. This roll up should stick together because of the peanut butter - make sure you add enough.
5. Sprinkle cinnamon over the top of the cinna-ana roll and serve. You could also add a little whipped cream on top here.
_____________________________________________________

I hope you will all try this recipe with your little one {or for yourself...I ate one too!}

Bug loved it!
She fed some to her bunny...
...and to me! {and it was good so I made one myself}

Kati also has an Etsy shop with tons of tools to live a healthier life! {recipe cards, food journals with tracker inserts and more}
You can also head on over to my Facebook page for a chance to win a pack of her recipe cards.

I convinced my sister to blog!

I have been telling my sister to start a blog of her own since she is so good at designing her nails {and mine...and my moms}. She follows lots of nail blogs herself and finally decided to do it! If you {or someone you know} are into painting your nails, have a look at her blog {or suggest it to a friend}. She'd love some followers.

Here is a little taste of what she does:

{Freebie Fridays} Win a Rosette Onesie from Belle Rose Designs

This giveaway is now closed.

Happy Freebie Friday! Today you have a chance to win an adorable Rosette Onesie from Belle Rose Designs! One lucky little princess will look oh so cute in it! First, let's meet the shop owner, Julie:

Tell us a bit about yourself.
I am a full time children's librarian and mom of two. When I'm not working and playing with my kids, I'm creating. My signature fabric flowers adorn jewelry, hair accessories, bookmarks, baby onesies and more.

What is your favorite item to create?
Fabric flowers! I love playing with fabric and turning it into something pretty!

What advice would you give to new artists on Etsy?
Look at your site with the eyes of a buyer. Every once in awhile I type in my web address and look at it as if I was seeing it for the first time. What do I like about it? What isn't working? What pictures are blurry that need retaken? Can I tell what I'm selling in this picture? It helps to just take a step back and see what is and isn't working.

How do you promote your work?

I blog, use Twitter and Facebook. I also use emmalinebride.com and iheartmaternity.com to gain exposure for my site.

Do you have any websites connected to your shop?

My blog: singingthreelittlebirds.blogspot.com
My twitter: twitter.com/julie3birds
My facebook: facebook.com/bellerosedesigns

Do you have a job outside of Etsy? How do you handle both?
For the next three months I work as a children's librarian however I quit last week to become a full time mommy. I'm working until the end of August and then staying home with my children and working on my Etsy site full time.

Where do you create?
My glue gun has a permanent spot next to my spot on the couch. After we get the kids to bed, my husband and I sit and watch TV. This is when and where I create my flowers. I keep all my fabric and supplies and containers that I bring out every night. Someday soon I'd love an actually workspace but for now this will have to do!

What are your goals for your shop?
Since I just quit my day job, I'd love to get to the point where I'm making more sales each week. My goal is to have a steady stream of sales each week. I'd also like to do more wholesaling and get my work in more local boutiques. I hope to keep tweaking my site, promoting and working on creating and listing new items that by the time I am no longer working full time I'll be making enough money to help with my children.

 You have a chance to win this adorable Pink Baby Onesie with Pink Fabric Flower Rosette handmade by bellerosedesigns!

{Toddler Tuesdays} Make Your Own Recycled Crayons

Bug loves coloring with crayons but they always seem to break into a million pieces because, well, she's a toddler & isn't careful! Instead of throwing those pieces out, why not make some new & colorful crayons! It's so easy & here is how to do it:

What you'll need:
  • Silicone Mold {in whatever shape you want...we used stars}
  • Broken crayons {we used Crayola} or you can use new crayons if you make these for favors like I did {I found a box of 64 for $3 on sale at RiteAid!}
  • An oven
What to do:
  • Preheat your oven to 220 degrees
  • Peel the paper wrapping off the crayons
  • Separate colors into whatever combinations you would like {have fun...we did some rainbow and some 2 toned}
  • Put crayon pieces into mold and bake in oven for about 20-25 minutes {check every 5-10 minutes}
  • When crayons are completely melted, take them out and let them cool.
  • Pop them out of the mold and let cool some more.
  • Color away!

We gave these out at Bug's birthday party in the goody bags!
{and then made some extra for Bug's Aunt Jess since she loves stars!}

{Mmm, Mmm, Mondays} with Tricia from Sweeter Than Sweets

It's Monday and what a yummy Monday this is! Tricia from Sweeter Than Sweets is here today to show us how to make homemade fruit leather! I used to love fruit roll ups when I was a kid {heck, I still love them now} but my mom never let me eat them. Here's a way to let your little one have a treat without all that added sugar!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I made homemade baby food as often as possible when Little Sweets was a baby. She loved 99% of everything I gave her, including tofu for finger food, barley cereal and oatmeal with kale (which she still eats every day and won't have her oatmeal any other way!).
Homemade Fruit Leather by SweeterThanSweets

Super Baby Food by Ruth YaronNow that she's older, I thought I'd try making Homemade Fruit Leather. I followed the directions from Super Baby Food by Ruth Yaron, the same book I used as a reference for all the healthy baby food I made her.

What a healthy and fun treat, right? Just pureed, dried fruit... no weird ingredients or added sugar.

What you need to make Homemade Fruit Leather:

Strawberries by SweeterThanSweets

strawberries (or any other fruit or combination of fruits)
your oven

Preheat your oven to 175 degrees Fahrenheit.

Prep a 10"x15" cookie sheet (with edges): Place a layer of plastic wrap a little longer than cookie sheet on top and smooth it out. Tape plastic wrap onto cookie sheet along all four edges.

Puree clean, dry fruit in a food processor or blender. You'll want approximately 2 cups of puree, but no more unless your cookie sheet is bigger than 10"x15". I used 25 medium-sized strawberries to get the right amount, which filled up my tiny food processor:

Homemade Fruit Leather by SweeterThanSweets

Pour pureed fruit onto prepared cookie sheet. Spread into all the corners and make sure it is evenly distributed. Cook in oven for 3-4 hours with door slightly open, or until fruit is thoroughly dried and pulls away from plastic wrap easily. (A more energy-efficient method is to cook it for 30-35 minutes in a 275 degree oven, then turn oven off and leave door closed overnight or for 8-10 hours.)

Homemade Fruit Leather by SweeterThanSweets

My cookie sheet (or oven?) was tilted a bit so I had one corner that was a bit mushy and didn't end up setting well, but the rest dried to a thin and slightly crispy leather.

At this point, you can just peel the fruit leather off the plastic wrap and eat it right away, or you can turn your fruit leather into homemade Fruit-By-The-Foot. Take the tape off the cookie sheet and roll up the plastic wrap from one of the shorter sides:

Homemade Fruit Leather by SweeterThanSweets

Use a sharp knife and cut through roll every 1" or so. When you are ready to eat it, remove plastic wrap and you'll have a 15" strip of fruit leather:

Homemade Fruit Leather by SweeterThanSweets

Little Sweets definitely enjoyed this healthy fruit treat!

It definitely saves you money, as Ruth Yaron points out in her book. Fruit Roll-Ups cost about $6.00 per pound, so if you're buying or growing fresh fruit for less than that, you're going to save money.

Making Fruit Leather is pretty time-intensive and a lot of work to get ten 1"x15" strips (especially since Little Sweets eats like 3 strips at a time) so I'll probably just make it when I have extra fresh fruit on hand. It's a great way to use up slightly overripe fruit, too!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I made some of this for Bug and she loved it! I accidentally deleted the pictures {along with some other fun family pics} though. :( Hate when that happens!

Be sure to stop by Tricia's blog {Sweeter Than Sweets} where she posts toddler friendly recipes, crafts & tutorials that I just know you all will love!

Tricia also has an adorable Etsy shop full of clips, towels, burp cloths and so much more for your little ones! {plus she is having a Christmas in July sale!}

{Freebie Friday} Win an art smock from BooPatch

This giveaway is now closed.

Happy Freebie Friday all! I have a great giveaway for your little artsy ones this week from Lauren of BooPatch! I definitely could have used one of her jumper smocks when Bug decided to go mud puddle jumping a couple weeks ago and got her dress covered in mud! First, lets find out some more about Lauren, BooPatch's shop owner:

Tell us a bit about yourself.
HI! I 'm Lauren, mom to two wonderfully energetic boys and wife to my best friend. "Boo" is 6 and "Patch" is 9. I started making things for them when they were babies and have never stopped! But I've been sewing since I was a kid. My mom taught me and I hated it growing up; except when it got me an instant 'A' in Home Economics; but as an adult I've come back around to the creativity of it. Most of the things I make come about because I saw something and thought "I can soooo make that better/cheaper/in my size" and most of the time I work off a design I've sketched up on scratch paper. Being able to sew makes you appreciate the quality of an object so much more!

Do you have a job outside of Etsy? How do you handle both?

I work as a secretary for a small public service office and my husband works primarily night shift. How do I handle both? Umm...when I figure that out I'll let you know!! No seriously....I work the standard 9-5 and come home, run kids around to Karate, Scouts, Sports...fit dinner in there somewhere and finally get everyone into bed at the end of the day. That's when I usually try to find time to work on BooPatch. IF I'm not to exhausted already. Otherwise I try to fit in my main sewing work on the weekends when my husband is around to do the Kid Stuff. I would never get as much done as I do without the support of friends and family, we are very very blessed in that aspect.

What is the inspiration for your work?

Inspiration comes in many forms...Art jumpers came about because I saw the idea in a Martha Stewart magazine years ago. I thought they were such a cute idea to use up my husbands old dress shirts that I made one for my oldest. Glad I did, fast forward a few years later and one day they didn't have them on and painted their bodies instead of the art work they were supposed to be creating.

As far as the other things in my shop, the pocket scarves were actually my neighbors idea...and for every scarf I sell I have to pay him with a dozen cookies! The wrist warmers...I saw some at a craft show that someone had felted and I thought they were so cute I bought them on the spot. Still have them, they're one of my favorites...I couldn't figure out how to felt but I took an old sweater and cut it up to make my own variation....Used to think they were pretty original till I realized they're all over Etsy! Hehe...live and learn!

Do any of your items go toward a special cause?

Every year around St. Patrick's Day our local Fire/PD/EMS get together and raise funds for St. Baldricks Society. This is a charity that raises money for children cancer research. Participants shave their heads in an act of solidarity with the children going thru treatment. This year our event raised over $81,000! My family and I went 3 years ago to support our friends and our youngest son, who was 3 at the time, decided he wanted to do it too...Since then we have done it every year, and this year a portion of my sales went to this event. Boo has been the youngest participant at our event for the last 3 years running!

Where do you create?

Well...I'd love to tell you that I have the most awesome work space with cubbys and desk space big enough for all my projects...but the truth is my work space is the dining room table. With big Rubbermaid containers holding all my fabric and finished products. Numerous baskets and sewing boxes litter a corner of our dining room slowly taking over. We are in the process of moving bedrooms around so that I can have an office but as any parent knows...fitting in the time for DIY home improvement is a slow process!

What are your goals for your shop?

What I'd love is for it to be self-sustaining, I've tried hard not to put up too much out of pocket expenses, but that is difficult sometimes! I mainly want to see my things sell, to be validated and my things found worthwhile. Sometimes its hard to believe beyond our own small circle of the world that somewhere someone else might think what we made is brilliant...that's what I want!! Brilliance! Sales! Success! But mainly I'd just be happy with making ends meet and indulging my creativity and shopping urges :-)

What advice would you give to new artists on Etsy?

Well as I am still a relatively new shop, I would have to say read, read, read! I spend time every day scanning the forums and my team pages. It really does help to join the teams and feel like you are part of a community. Also don't be afraid to ask for criticism and make changes, no matter how small they may seem. Sometimes the small changes make a huge difference! Contemplate trading services with someone to get things done...Maybe you don't have a great camera or a steady hand (me)...offer free advertising to a photography friend in exchange for taking great pictures of your products.
Lastly take your time....don't rush, and don't stress. The one thing I have seen endlessly on Etsy is that everyone remembers when they started out and how frustrating it can be. It will happen, even if it happens slowly! Not everyone turns out to be an overnight success! Although we can all dream of that...sigh.
