An Interview with Avabowtiquee & Giveaway

This giveaway is now closed.

Meet Melissa, shop owner of Avabowtiquee.
What a busy mom she must be!
Tell us a little about yourself.
I was born and raised in Georgia. I graduated college with a degree in accounting. I currently work 6 hours a day as a controller for a vinyl railing manufacturer. I am married to an awesome guy who helps me with my bow business. He is the one behind all of the social networking. Thank goodness, because I think I might run out of time if I had to do that too. We have 5 children. The oldest is almost 12 and the youngest, Ava, is 10 months. We all love to travel whenever we get a few spare moments. To some, my life may seem very overwhelming, but I couldn't imagine it any other way.

What made you want to become an artist?
Ava Bowtique started soon after my baby, Ava, was born. Since she had very little hair, I loved putting headbands on her and attaching hair bows. I saw the cost of this love rising with every new outfit.

Since my mother and sister are very creative I thought I might have some kind of hidden talent so I explored the craft of making hair accessories. In the end, I found that I love it and want to make more and more.

What is your favorite item to create?Although I enjoy creating all the items that I sell on Etsy, I especially enjoy creating the stacked bows because the variety of ribbons and the combination of colors give me a good deal of satisfaction.

What advice would you give to new artists on Etsy?Don't give up when the sales aren't rolling in at first. Tweak your marketing methods and test a variety of different ads. When you find a promotion that works, build on that.

How do you promote your work? While my Etsy shop is my primary transaction facilitator, I also use social media, blogging, and giveaway contests to drive traffic to my sites. I've also exhibited and sold at local boutique events and children's consignment sales.

Do you have any websites connected to your shop

Facebook fan page is www.facebook.com/avabowtique
Twitter username is avabowtique or go to: www.twitter.com/avabowtique
My new blog is at avabowtique.weebly.com

Do any of your items go toward a special cause?I recently sent a number of my first bows to Haiti to be be given to orphan children there. I've also considered making bows for fund raising purposes, so girls could sell my bows and their share of the proceeds would go to their charity, fund their mission trip, etc.

Do you have a job outside of Etsy? How do you handle both?I'm am an accountant for a vinyl rail company. I work for them by day (about 30 hours a week). At night, I make bows, list my items, handle customer orders and think of new bow and clippie designs for Ava Bowtique.

Where do you create?

In the corner of my living room. A big comfy chair and ottoman serve as my workspace. And it's positioned where I can still see the TV.

What are your goals for your shop?To sell more consistently, to design and make available an even greater variety of bows, clippies, and other accessories, and to become one of the top boutique hair bow artists on Etsy.

Sent from mermaidbaby!

Bug loves art of any kind so for Easter the Easter Bunny got her a beautiful smock from mermaidbaby's shop! (I had no idea the Easter Bunny shopped on Etsy, did you?) I think it is absolutely adorable and I almost don't want her to make a mess on it!

She was so excited to have a real smock instead of the over-sized toddler tee
I used to put her in.

Thank you Easter Bunny!
(and thank you mermaidbaby)

My new addiction!

I came across this tutorial on how to make your own subway art and I can't stop making it!

Here's what I have created so far:

Can be printed as a 5 x 7
This one can be printed as a 5 x 7 to go in a frame. If you use a dry erase marker on any glass frame it is erasable! Cool, huh?
Can be printed as an 8 x 10

What do you guys think? All you have to do is print it out and frame it! If you make one I'd love for you to post it here on my Flickr group...it's pretty lonely over there.

If you would like either of these prints for free (for the first 5 to comment) just comment which one with your email address. I want to see how sending it goes.  I can't guarantee this will work...it's a jpg file. I may be able to get it to a pdf though.
(to avoid spam write your email in this format- totshop728[at]yahoo[dot]com)

I can't wait to print one of these and hang it over my daughters crib...probably the "Goodnight Moon" one since I read it to her every night before bed!

{Tuesday Thoughts} Anyone have a magic wand?

The weather is getting nicer here and I am finally back to pre-baby weight! Woop woop! The only thing I am hating about beach weather is my dreaded stretch marks! I don't have them on my stomach (whew) but all over my thighs...down past my knees! (I know, some have it way worse but I'm still complaining) Small price to pay for having my beautiful Bug, but I still don't like them...at all!

Does anyone know how to make them go away?! I have tried some lotions but nothing has worked. One thing that did make me feel better was the Jergens Natural Glow since being a little tan made them less visible (and I refuse to go into a tanning bed or pay for someone to spraypaint me).

I'd hate to spend $40 for a small bottle of cream claiming to make them go away. Has anyone tried this or know of anything that has helped you?

{Mmm, mmm, Mondays} Unsweetened Applesauce

I recently bought a whole bunch of apples because Bug loves frozen chunks for her teething net. After freezing a whole Ziploc bag of them, I still had lots left. Bug has been loving applesauce lately and it is super easy to make (and it's yummy even without sugar)!

What you'll need:

4-5 apples (I used 6 because mine were on the small side)
Cinnamon
Water

Here's what you do:

Cut up the apples into chunks. You can leave the skin on for older toddlers, but for babies you can peel them. Put them in a pot and add 3/4 cup water and about 1/2-1 tsp. cinnamon.

Cook over medium heat for 15-20 minutes. Be sure that there is always water in the pot. If you need to, you can add more as it cooks.

Test the apples and make sure they are soft. You can mash the apples with a potato masher to make chunky applesauce (my fave) or you can use a food processor (or an imitation Magic Bullet) to make it smooth. If you are processing it, you may need to add water to obtain the consistency you would like.

I love this thing!
Want to make it even more delicious? Mix apples with another fruit! I used apples and pears recently and it was so yummy!

We're almost there!

Well, we tried bath night again and this time Bug was asking to go in the tub. She has played in the tub before but once I reach for the faucet she flips...but not this time! She asked me to put it on so I did and she actually was ok with it!

She wouldn't let me take her diaper off nor did she sit in the water, but I didn't care much.

She finally got washed without a tear...

until it was time to get out!

Happy Earth Day

It's Earth Day and to celebrate I made Bug this top to wear today.

She wasn't exactly in the mood to model this day.

Some things to be sure to do today and every day:
  1. Turn off lights and appliances when not in use.
  2. Do not leave water running when you don't need to (like when brushing teeth)
  3. Carpool if you can.
  4. Get a water filter! They have that new one that refills water bottles!
  5. Recycle.
  6. Instead of throwing away books or things you don't need anymore, pass it on to someone who could use it.
  7. Use cloths instead of paper towels. (see below)
  8. Use reusable grocery bags (see below)
  9. Use reusable sandwich/snack bags (see below)
If you have an Earth friendly tip, please share it with us!

I have some eco-friendly things to feature today!

An Interview with petitepaintbrush & Giveaway

This giveaway is now closed.

Meet Etsy shop owner Jill from petitepaintbrush.

Tell us a bit about yourself.
My name is Jill, and I am a wife, mother of two kids under the age of two, full time art teacher, artist, Etsy shop owner, and I’m a little tired.  : )   I started my Etsy shop, petitepaintbrush, while I was on maternity leave with my first child.  I create artwork for children, specifically paintings and collage.

What made you want to become an artist?
For as long as I can remember, I wanted to be an artist.  One day, when I was a toddler, I was in my room, supposedly taking a nap.  I took my crayons and created a drawing on my bedroom wall.   I remember being so excited and proud of the drawing, and I could not understand why my mom was so upset!

What is your favorite item to create?
I love to paint!  I was on bed rest a few months ago, and was determined to use that time to create more artwork.  Since I found it difficult to paint while on the couch, I started experimenting with collage.  I created several collages from recycled junk mail.  I like the idea of reusing materials to create something beautiful.

What advice would you give to new artists on Etsy?
I still consider myself a new artist on Etsy, so I would welcome advice from others!  My biggest challenge is finding time to work on my shop, so I guess I would advise others to make time for their art.

How do you promote your work?
I promote my work with my Facebook page, belonging to several Etsy teams, and word of mouth.  Also, I give gift certificates to my shop as baby gifts.

Do you have any websites connected to your shop (blog, facebook, twitter)?
My Facebook page is www.facebook.com/petitepaintbrush  I welcome new fans!

What is the inspiration for your work?
My children are my inspiration.  Before my first child was born, I set a goal to start an Etsy shop, but I did not know what type of shop to start.   After creating paintings for my daughter’s bedroom, I decided that I would love to create art for children.  I am also an art teacher, and I enjoy the excitement children show towards art.

Do any of your items go toward a special cause?
Not currently, but I am open to the idea.

Do you have a job outside of Etsy? How do you handle both?
I am a full time art teacher at an elementary school.  I’m not sure I handle both well, so I just try my best.

Where do you create?
At our house, we have what I call a “budio,” which is a guest bedroom and art studio!  When I was on bed rest for a few months, the couch was my art studio.  I still find little scraps of paper stuck between the cushions.

What are your goals for your shop?
My goals for my shop include creating more inventory and increasing traffic and sales.  Also, I want to make sure I make time to reach these goals.

You can win this beautiful Swing Print from Jill's original artwork!

{Come Together Kids} Chocolate Covered Peeps

I was browsing around the blog world (my addiction) and I saw Come Together Kids (one of my fave blogs) post about chocolate covered peeps. Who could pass that up? Not I. At 10:00pm I decided I had to make these! I used peep chicks and just dipped the bottoms since I didn't have any sprinkles on hand. I packed some up to give out (and ate a few too). I will be going back to the store tomorrow for more peeps for sure!

Paper Plate Chick

Happy Thursday!

Today I'm over at Goat Notes Blog to show you all how to make

Please stop in and leave some love!

She also has a sweet Etsy shop full of jewelry and vintage! I just love her necklaces!

Crochet Easter Egg Cozies

Well Easter is on it's way and I have been trying to squeeze in some Easter crafting. I found a few patterns on Lion Brand's website for free and if it's for free it's for me!

I made this bunny cozy (which you can also find in my shop):

Then I made a carrot cozy and two regular cozies (for the regular ones I just followed the same steps as in the carrot and left out the bottom):

If you make any of these I'd love to see! Share your pictures here.

Easy Makes Me Happy has a crochet pattern for stuffed eggs to crochet.
They are super cute, aren't they?!

You can find her pattern here.

Be sure to check out her blog and Etsy shop...love them!

We're Making Progress

It has been a while since we moved and Bug is still afraid of the big scary bath tub! I was getting a little desperate and was running out of people to ask for advice so I emailed Cheri from I Am Momma - Hear Me Roar for her Sharing Saturdays. (Here is the post.) Her readers all gave me great tips and we are slowly making progress. I took out the old baby bath and put it in the tub, no go...so I put it outside the tub on a towel and she gave her baby doll a bath. She was a little iffy at first, but then she started loving it!

Fast forward a few days later...I moved the tub into the kitchen (since I had some cleaning and cooking to get done - two birds with one stone) and Bug actually wanted to go in! She wanted her diaper on, but she went in and sat in the water! Woo hoo! Now I feel like we're getting somewhere!

I hope we will be getting closer and closer to being comfortable with water and the tub since the weather is getting nicer and she will NEED a bath after playing outside...or some pool time once summer gets here!

Guest Post by Julia from Goat Notes

I am so excited to be having my first guest blogger today! Julia from Goat Notes blog is going to teach us how to make a bunny broach out of an empty soda can! What a great way to celebrate Easter & Earth Day!

Recycled Soda Can Easter Bunny Broach

Hi, I’m Julia from Goat Notes Blog, and I am so excited to be here on Tutus & Tea Parties! Today I am sharing with you my Easter Bunny Broach made from an empty soda can!

Materials:
1 Empty soda can, cleaned and dried
A pair of sturdy Scissors
Permanent makers: 1 Black, and then 3 colors you choose- I went with Grass Green, Turquoise, and Yellow
Masking tape
Sturdy sewing needle
Thread (I used light pink, use what matched your color scheme)
Small 3 inch crocheted doily (I bought mine at the Dollar Store)
Felt cut into 2 inch circles (you will need 2)
Sticky pin-back
Glue gun
A silhouette of a Bunny (Google Images has many to choose from, here’s mine)

Make Your Broach!

  1. Select and cut-out your silhouette bunny image and set aside.
  2. Prepare the Soda can by taking your scissors and cutting off the top and the bottom of the can so you end up with a flat piece of aluminum to work with.
  3. Cut the piece of aluminum in half. Set aside one piece of the aluminum for another project.
  4. Tape the top and bottom edges of the other piece to your work area using the masking tape.
  5. Trace the bunny silhouette with the black permanent marker and cut out the image. Discard all of the aluminum scraps so all that remains is your aluminum bunny.
  6. Decorate your aluminum bunny with the permanent markers. Get creative!
  7. Set-aside your bunny for a moment to work on the base of your broach. Cut out two, 2 inch circles from your felt. Place one of the circle pieces on top of your doily.
  8. Sew around the edges of the entire circle, I like to sew big stitches, but you can do what works best for you.
  9. Now, place your aluminum bunny on top of the felt and doily and line it up with where you want it to rest on your base. Using your needle puncture holes in your bunny in all main areas that need to be secured. Take a look at the photo to get an idea where I punctured my holes. After you puncture the holes, realign your bunny on top of the felt and doily. Using your needle and thread attach the bunny to the doily and felt. It won’t matter where the stitches for the bunny lands as we will be covering the back for a clean look.
  10. Flip the whole broach over, attached bunny and all, and using your glue gun glue the remaining felt circle to the back of the broach to protect the stitching.
  11. Attach and pin back, I used a sticky one as that is what I had, but you could easily sew the pin back onto the second felt piece before gluing it to the doily.
  12. AND, Viola! A lovely, totally unique broach to wear on Easter!

Super cute, right?! I made one too! I didn't have a doily so I made a crochet flower and used that instead. I also had my daughter color on the bunny so I can wear something she helped make. Here is mine:

A big thank you to Julia for being a great guest blogger and for showing us a great Easter/Spring/Earth Day craft!

If anyone makes this I'd love for you to share your creation!
You can upload your pictures here.
