Meet Etsy shop demossdesigns owner Sarah!
Tell us a little about yourself.
What made you want to become an artist?
I am a mother of three young girls ages 5 and under. I stay at home with them during the day and I work 3 evenings a week as a social worker. I am from both Winter Park, Fl and Louisville, KY but I currently reside in a small town outside Cincinnati, OH. I love to read, travel, and go out for dinner (this one a little too much).
What made you want to become an artist?
I was driving with a friend about 10 years ago and saw this very modern quilt in her car. I had never seen anything like it and immediately asked her to teach me how. She gave me a few pointers and it snowballed from there. I used to just make them for friends and family but after I found Etsy, I decided to give it a shot.
What is your favorite item to create?
That's hard to say. I love piecing quilts and getting all the fabrics together but the actual quilting part is a pain. I have to say that when they are totally finished, I am in love. The baby items melt my heart though.
What advice would you give to new artists on Etsy?
I always tell people there are layers to Etsy. Just getting on and creating a shop is easy. Getting more involved with meeting other sellers, forming relationships, marketing, and taking your shop to the next level is an entirely different thing.
How do you promote your work?
I have a facebook fan page and I do a couple shows a year but most people find me through word of mouth. My family and friends have been great at spreading the word.
Do you have any websites connected to your shop (blog, facebook, twitter)?
What is the inspiration for your work?
The fabric itself is my inspiration. I can spend hours looking at fabrics. Often I get them home and think, what can I make with this. I love using left over quilt fabrics for baby items. I think baby stuff made with more adult patters and very fun.
Do any of your items go toward a special cause?
The only cause I am contributing to now are my household expenses :)
Do you have a job outside of Etsy? How do you handle both?
I do. I am a stay at home mom to three young girls. I am also a social worker who investigates child abuse in the evenings. It gets a little hectic during busy times but I enjoy it. Most of my Etsy creations are made during my children's nap times.
Where do you create?
I would post a picture but I am pretty sure it would be too embarassing. I have a corner of our unfinished basement with all my machines and supplies. It is incredibly messy and disorganized. We are also in the process of finishing the basement so it is kind of a construction zone. I have dreams of a wonderfully organized space once the basement project is complete.
What are your goals for your shop?
I don't have huge goals in mind. I would like to continue to have a steady stream of orders. Making things is my creative relief so I would like to be able to continue to make a small profit for something I would probably be doing anyway if I was not on Etsy.
Is there anything else you would like to share with us?
Part of my fabric obsession means that I have a giant stash of fabrics ready to be cut into. If anyone ever wants something custom made, I would love surf through my stash to make something fabulous.
