{Freebie Friday} Win a $15 Shop Credit to MeadowbrookCreations!

This giveaway is now closed.

Happy Freebie Friday everyone! I am so happy to introduce you to Kendra, shop owner of MeadowbrookCreations. Today you have a chance to win a $15.00 shop credit to her shop!

Tell us a bit about yourself.
I’m a 38 year old native Missourian (Springfield/Branson/Joplin region). Six years ago, I relocated to the suburbs of Detroit, Michigan after meeting my future husband, Jacob, on eharmony.com (yes, we are one of those couples; no, we will not be doing any commercials). We’ve been happily married (for the most part) for 4 years. We have a seven year old spoiled Boston Terrier named Sally and an almost 2 year old little boy, Nathanial. I currently am a stay at home mom but am hoping to promote my Etsy shop enough to not have to reenter the workforce on a full time basis.

What made you want to become an artist?

I never considered myself an artist but I guess I am – my palate is just fabrics and patterns instead of paint and canvas.

I grew up with my mother sewing most of our clothes. Once I entered the workforce and discovered the cost of store bought clothes versus homemade clothes, I purchased a sewing machine on a garage sale. With the help of my mom on many, many long distance phone calls (cell phones and free minutes were not around then), I taught myself to sew my own clothes. I moved on to sewing for my last niece and then on home furnishing and craft items.

What is your favorite item to create?

I can’t narrow this one down. I love to see fabrics come together and compliment each other. If I have to choose one, I’d say the baby items are the best (and quickest).

What advice would you give to new artists on Etsy?
I’m fairly new myself but I’ve been encouraged by family not to give up – cliché as it sounds. There are people interested in your media – you just have to find them and it may take a little longer.

How do you promote your work?

I use my own items when out in public. I’ve notified friends and family of my site -not for them to purchase anything but in the event they would pass it along. Since I’m just getting started and my time to work is limited to nap times and certain evenings, I’ve got a long list of ways I’m going to promote. Local craft shows are another venue I’m looking into.

What is the inspiration for your work?
When I sew something, I think ‘Would I want this? How useful is it?’ I tend to think in terms of usefulness of an object as opposed to something just decorative. Having an active two year old makes you change your thinking. When we buy toys now, we think ‘Can this be used as a weapon or how destructive can this be?’

Do any of your items go toward a special cause?

On occasion, I’ll donate something to an animal rescue; especially Boston Terrier rescues. I love dogs and have a huge soft spot for them. I hope to be able to make regular donations in the future. As the occasion rises and depending on the cause, I would consider a donation.

Do you have a job outside of Etsy? How do you handle both?

Other than Mama – no.

Where do you create?

My workspace is wherever I can make space. My sewing machine is set up in the corner of my kitchen; my cutting table is downstairs. Not exactly the best way to work but I have to take what I can. I hope to one day move my entire operation downstairs. I’ve already claimed the basement as my ‘woman cave’. However, the basement is a continual work in progress.

What are your goals for your shop?

In my dream, I’d like to be one of those that achieves thousands of sales; in reality, I’ll be happy with it bringing in enough to be considered a small part-time job.

Is there anything else you would like to share with us?

My store name “The General Store Boutique by Meadowbrook Creations” is a combination of many things. Meadowbrook is the street I live on. I especially like The General Store Boutique because the old time stores really were a place where you could find anything for everyone. I would hope that the items in my store would appeal to everyone whether or not you had children, young, old, male, female, pet owner or not.
